The 470 woman strong collective, established in 2014, has given the women of Bener Maeriah a voice, an income and independence. - The members of KOKOWAGAYO are not only the managers of the plantation, but also the owners and are directly involved in coffee processing.
Owing to centuries of experience of the Gayo people in coffee plantation, they are capable of transforming coffee parchment, pulp, leaves, stalks, and manure into organic fertilizer. Thanks to the high growing altitude and the shade of trees, the coffee ripens slowly allowing cherries to develop their full flavour. Once entirely ripened, the cherries are carefully handpicked, pulped, and naturally fermented before being washed and finally graded.
The KOKOWAGAO recieves a premium from Fair Trade, which they use to for coffee education and community benefits - so far they have done coffee cupping & soil fertility training, and set up a kindergarten for their children. They are current planning to establish a women's health centre, focusing on reproductive health.
You can read more about the KOKOWAGAYO project on the Fair Trade website.
